FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, April 1, 2013:
Effective immediately, Ridge Light Opera of New Jersey is now Light Opera of New Jersey. In 1995, Lauran Corson’s vocal arts studio in Basking Ridge, NJ began to serve as the focal point for a group of musicians who performed together in concerts and staged shows based on repertoire drawn from Opera, Operetta and Musical Theatre. This offshoot of Corson Studios incorporated in December 2003 with Lauran taking the reins as artistic director and William C. Corson serving as executive producer.
After 18 years of productions, in which the group had become a seasoned and highly-recognized arts ensemble, they selected a new name to establish a stronger identity with greater opportunities to promote their mission of “increasing, preserving and maintaining awareness of the musical treasures of Light Opera and Musical Theatre of the 20th Century through high-quality performance, education and community outreach, by featuring both extraordinary professional artists and outstanding amateur performers.”
Executive Producer William Corson said, “We want to do this as we are ready to take the next step, having a real ‘season’ to offer to the public. We are poised to make several adjustments now including a new outreach group called ‘Savoy Faire‘ which is designed to provide a 45 minute presentation of Gilbert and Sullivan favorites for schools, retirement communities and other public organizations. We are also very excited about the construction of a new theater at Fellowship Senior Living in Basking Ridge, where we hope to be performing very soon.”
LONJ collaborates with several orchestras and choral groups to produce their shows. In March, 2014 they will perform Mozart’s The Magic Flute with the Central Jersey Symphony Orchestra. The 2013-2014 season also includes Orpheus in the Underworld in September 2013 and Amahl and the Night Visitors in December 2013.
The Corsons and the LONJ Board of Directors wish to thank Father Rick Morley and the parishioners of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church for the use of their church for many performances over the years. They are also grateful for the support of hundreds of audience members, both residents of Basking Ridge and those that come from all over Northern and Central New Jersey.
